ABOUT US

Gihon Women Empowerment Kenya, was founded in July 2015 by Agnes Gitonga and Lucy Wanjin, after identifying extreme levels of poverty within their community. With a dream of a better life for the women of Kitengela, Kenya, the two women set out to create a one-year annual empowerment program that could accomplish just that.

Gihon is a non-governmental organization. Our aim is to empower women without access to formal education, who have experienced gender based violence, rape, hunger & HIV/Aids. The women in our program take formal lessons, learn practical skills and begin a new chapter in life, free of charge charge.

Our program operates during weekdays from 10am to 3pm. This allows the women to get their kids ready for school in the morning, and gives them time to cook, clean & help with homework in the evenings. We also have a childcare center next door, allowing the women to bring their children that are not yet in school to stay in a safe place while they concentrate on their lessons.

Our program runs for one year, for a total of 4 semesters. Our classes include counseling, jewelery making, tailoring, nails and hairdressing, women's rights, health classes, CV/resume writing, job training and parenting.

We have professional teachers, student interns and volunteers from all across the world who teach our classes & mentor our particpants.

Gihon also seeks to raise Kitengela's next generation by operating the Kings & Queens Rehoboth Learning Centre across the street. We take children off the streets and put them in classrooms, as Agnes searches for a sponsor. When a student is sponsored, part of the fund goes to the maintenance of the school, as well as ensuring the sponsered child's needs.

The school program is our largest, but one of many projects that we run to create an equality-driven & educated Kitengela.
